An upgrade to the computer system at a cost of $146,112 was approved by the Jackson County Board of Commissioners Monday night.
The BOC agreed to fund the construction of a fiber link from the courthouse, located at 5000 Jackson Parkway, to the Administrative Building, located at 67 Athens Street.
Technology director Justin King said this will increase the bandwidth between the data centers to support existing services to EMS, the sheriff’s office, the finance department, the purchasing department and other county offices.
For additional details and other BOC decisions, see the June 3 issue of The Jackson Herald.
It's stories like this that drive taxpayers crazy. This story is on the same page with the story where the Tax Commisioner warned of inevitable tax increases for homeowners with a homestead exemption.
Who do you politicians think you're working for? I'll remember this on election day.
He is saying the connection between the two locations isn’t fast enough for whatever services they are trying to put through it.
I personally don’t mind this project compared to other projects such as the Fire Training Facility. To me this makes more sense than other ridiculous projects the county has recently done. But then again I am a technical person so my view is biased.
Well, for starters every dollar proposed to be spent on technical stuff should be discussed in general language and composed for the general audience. Get technical discussion out of the technical forum and into the public forum. Mr King could have helped by saying why more bandwidth met the needs of Jackson County citizens, rather than it supports existing services to EMS, the sheriff’s office, the finance department, the purchasing department and other county offices. If these are existing services, then they must be doing OK, huh?
There are already more claims on citizens’ income than can be easily meet, so convince me that there is something in this expenditure of value to me, not just to those government departments.
I was at the BOC meeting and the IT guy actually went more in depth to what those services were for EMS and the sheriffs. The article in this paper isn’t giving all the details of what was said. Not to mention the commissioners were the one’s asking the questions they are partially to blame for not asking for more precise non technical translations for the rest of us. They are supposed to be our representatives!
