Sheriff's office seeking information on missing teen

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information on the whereabouts of a 14-year-old Lawrenceville girl who apparently ran away during a shopping trip to the Tanger Outlet Center in Commerce Dec. 19.

Galilea Magana is described as a Hispanic female with black hair, brown eyes, five feet tall and weighing 125 pounds.

“Investigators are working this as a runaway juvenile, as they have discovered information that the child left a note that she intended to run away, and also had been talking with someone over a dating site,” said Major David Cochran. “Investigators are in the process of following up on those leads at this time. She and her mother had been at Tanger Mall on Dec. 19 shopping when this incident took place. We do not know at this time how she left the mall.”

Officials believe Magana was picked up by Eduardo Hernandez or Eduardo Jiminez, also known as “Lalo,” to whom Magana had been talking over the Internet.

Anyone with information on her location is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 706-367-8718.

New Year’s Day program planned

The 85th annual Jackson County New Year’s Day program will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 2, in the auditorium of the Administrative Building in Jefferson.

The first such New Year’s Day program was held in 1927, with Judge W.W. Dickson presiding.

This year, pastor Jeff Williams of the Church at Southside will be the featured speaker. Mary Burley will sing “God Bless America.” Magistrate Court Judge Billy Chandler will introduce county officials and guests. Tax commissioner Don Elrod will introduce the speaker.

TeenPact, a Jackson County organization dedicated to preparing students for business and political leadership, will again host the event and provide coffee and doughnuts.

While the historic Jackson County courthouse is being renovated, the event will be held in the county Administrative Building. Because New Year’s Day falls on Sunday this year, the meeting will be held on Monday, Jan. 2, which is a county holiday.

“All are invited to attend the program, with the purpose of thanking God for the blessings of the past year and seeking divine guidance and blessings for the upcoming year,” said Don Moore, organizer.
