Sharon Rae Crouse, 63, of Nicholson, died Friday, June 27, 2008. Survivors include her husband, Larry E. Crouse; children, Patrick James Crouse, Michael L. Crouse, Melissa M. Darnel, Matthew C. Crouse; and six grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Winfrey’s Funeral Home, Athens, is in charge of arrangements.

Annie Mae Kidd, 87, of Gainesville, died Saturday, June 28, 2008, following an extended illness. She was born on April 1, 1921, in Jackson County, the daughter of the late Marion and Florence Savage Porter. She was retired from New Holland Mill (Pacolet Manufacturing), and was Baptist. Panthers host Kiddie Camp

Around 30 girls participated in the annual JCCHS Kiddie Camp this week. The camp focused on showing the campers the fundamentals of basketball. The camp had one group for kindergarten through fifth graders and another for middle schoolers. Sea Dragons well into swimming season

The Jefferson Sea Dragons have been showing spirit at the past few swim meets. At the June 14 NGSL Pentathlon in Winder, only the best swimmers participated. Herald wins award for sports story

The sports section of The Jackson Herald was honored by the Georgia Sports Writers Association during its annual contest.

Mainstreet News reporter Brandon Reed took first place in the Best Local Feature Story category for his story “Jefferson track gone but not forgotten.”

The story recounted the history of the Jackson County Speedway, a half-mile racetrack located along the current Damon Gause Bypass, which operated from 1947 to the early 1950s.

Pioneer NASCAR racer Swayne Pritchett, of Baldwin, lost his life at the track in May of 1948.

The story was also selected as the winner of the Division III Furman Bisher Sweepstakes Award for best story in classification.

Judges for this year’s contest included Mark Blaudschun, sports writer for The Boston Globe and former president of the Football Writers Association of America; Clyde Bolton, former sports writer with The Birmingham News; Corky Simpson, sports writer with The Tucson (Ariz.) Citizen and Dick Rosetta, former sports writer with The Salt Lake City Tribune.

Outdoor watering restrictions to ease for some customers
