A student from East Jackson Comprehensive High School was killed and two other people, including another teen, were injured Tuesday afternoon when a truck hit a car broadside on Hwy. 129 in the South Jackson community of Redstone.
The wreck happened at the intersection of Hwy. 129 and New Kings Bridge Road around 4:20 p.m. The driver of the car — Kason Dubose, 17, Commerce — was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second teen — Brandon Garrett, 17 — and the driver of the truck — Kenneth Owens, 45, Comer — were transported to Athens Regional Medical Center. Garrett was said to be in "critical" condition while the truck driver had non-life threatening injuries.
Units from South Jackson Fire and Rescue, Jackson County EMS and the Jackson County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene. Hwy. 129 was closed on the southbound side for around 30 minutes.
BRASELTON DEATH
Also Tuesday afternoon, a Winder woman who was a school teacher in Hall County was killed in a wreck on New Cut Road in Braselton.
The Georgia State Patrol said Maria Cabel, 54, was driving along New Cut Road when she crossed the centerline and tried over-correcting her Toyota Corolla. Cabel later crossed over Hwy. 53 and drove into a ditch, where her vehicle was overturned, according to the state patrol.
Cabel was ejected from the passenger side window, troopers said. Reports from the scene said the vehicle landed on the driver and she was pulled from underneath by bystanders.
Cabel was taken by helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital.

For Kason Dubose
Today I got some tragic news. It hit so hard I wasn't sure what to do. His life was taken just like that. And it was gone like the drop of a hat. One mistake can change your life. It hurts just like the cut of a knife. Remember chin up, don't ever let it drop. Because once you do you'll never reach the top. Watch what you do and be careful what you say, because you never know who's here and gone the next day. You remember the friendship and what made it start. But you know he'll always have a place in your heart. Put on a smile and never let it fade. He's in heaven now, he wouldn't want to trade. Keep him in your heart and never let him go. We will all miss him and this he knows. The other one lived because God has a plan. And God will walk with him hand in hand.
I hope you guys liked it. I pray that God will walk with the Dubose family as he helps them trhough this. Keep them in your prayers. Pray hard that BG makes it through. He's staying strong and God will pull him through this. And I know that Kason made a huge difference in the hallways of East Jackson High School. No person as ever gotten this much respect from the students of our school. As for the Dubose and Garrett family; You guys are in my prayers every night. We never truely know how blessed we are until something tragic like this happens. Its just sad we had to loose an amazing person to realize it.
PS: I love yall....and everybody including GOD. GET SAVED!!!!!
This was a moment in time that every Eagle on campus understood; it was a difficult time for the Eagle family and we had to come together. There are so many special times that you get to share with your students; times that only a person in the profession can understand. For most of our faculty, we too lost a child when Kason joined God's eternal classroom. For many months to come, we will see the empty desk in our rooms and think of Kason; we will be on hall duty and expect him to round the corner on his way to class; we will question why he is late for prom or for graduation exercises; we will long to see that smile that he always possessed for student and teacher alike. And all of those moments will remind us of what a very precious person Kason Dubose was.
My first year as a high school teacher has proven to be a challenging one, this moment being the most challenging. Kason was a senior, a student I had taught twice in middle school because I chose to move with the 7th graders to 8th grade. I wasn't shocked when I spoke with Kason recently. High school had not changed him. His smile could still light up a room; his laugh was still unique. And he still possessed the qualities that any mother would want in a son. He was dedicated to his education and had a sincere respect for all of his classmates. I would like to think that anyone who met Kason would have liked him. And there is no doubt in my mind that those students who called him friend knew that in him they had a true friend - one that could make them laugh, one that would buy their lunch, one that would accept them for who they were.
How do we say goodbye to such a special person? I wish I knew. I do know that death ends a life, not a relationship. And for this reason, Kason will live in the hearts of everyone who knew him for a long time – perhaps forever for many.
Mr. Dubose, I am honored to have been given the opportunity to call you student and to have you call me teacher.
And we must remember to pray for the one that loaned the car to boys, as well as the driver of the truck, because they to are dealing with the pain, memory and the sorrow of the accident.
Again lets pray for all that are and will be affected by this tragedy.
