A West Jackson man was killed in the storms that tore through the area Tuesday night.
Jason Lee Combs, 29, of Hoschton, died after a large tree was blown over and fell onto his Cambridge Farms Drive house. Combs was reportedly asleep in his bed.
Combs’ wife and two children were in the bedroom at the time of the incident, but were unharmed.
While most of the subdivision has no large trees, this house sat at the end of a cul-de-sac at the woodline. The tree that fell on the house was completely uprooted by the strong winds which slammed Jackson County.
Police caution tape surrounded the property on Wednesday morning. The West Jackson Fire Department and Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call. WJFD worked to free Combs from the tree.
The strong wind also blew over a pine tree across Hwy. 332 near where the death occurred. Other downed trees were reported in Jefferson and on I-85.
The storms also caused widespread power outages. Jackson EMC reported 15,000 of its customers lost power at some point in the night. Utility crews and public safety personnel worked throughout the night and Wednesday to clear the damage.
