The Arcade City Council denied a business license request for a bar at its monthly meeting on Monday.
Daniel Samples filed the request to operate a bar at 2888 Athens Highway. Samples said he planned to open a bar in the building that once housed Ronny’s Place.
The bar would be open Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays for parties only and Thursdays and Fridays from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Saturdays from 5 p.m. to 12 p.m.
Arcade City Clerk Deborah Mockus said there were some issues with the information that came back on Samples’ criminal background check. Mockus would not discuss the specifics of this information at the advice of the city’s attorney.
Council member Cindy Bone said, “I hate to see a bar right there.” Bone said she would like to see a business that would help the city. “I am not comfortable with opening another bar in the city,” Bone added.
Our city should enact a law where food must be served for alcohol to be served.
I think you have a point concerning the courts. Money does talk. Lawyers need to make a living. What I never understood is why they lowered the legal limit of alcohol from .10% to .08%. Was there really that much difference or is it like you said, to collect more fine money? I don't believe that someone who blows a .09% is impaired to the extent that he would not know what he is doing. Maybe there should be two tiers of DUI like in other states. If you blow a .15% for example maybe you should be punished more severely.
I don't like unnecessary deaths caused by drunks on our roads so if we're going to err I would rather err on the side of caution.
Anyone who has more than a couple drinks needs a designated driver or someone's couch to sleep on. Bars should be made to install breathalyzers. Then folks would know before they left whether they should be driving.
I was coming home from the home-opener of the Braves last year where 4 people were killed by a young drunk driver on 1-85 North. This slowed our trip down going home. I read in the paper where the family of the accused was upset that the judge didn't give him bond. The constitution requires bond unless there is a strong reason to believe there is a flight risk. But I really don't think the family realized that this man is allegedly responsible for 4 human beings losing their lives and he drove away without stopping. This young man's life is over before it even began. He is very young. What a shame. No, I can't find much sympathy for him.
I hope the police keep up the good work stopping DUI. We also need laws against using cell phones in cars.
