The Jackson County Parks and Recreation Department will host the Dizzy Dean World Series.
The department will host the 11-year-old Baseball World Series July 16-21 at the Lamar Murphy Park in Jefferson. The East Jackson recreation park in Nicholson will serve as an additional site for games.
There are 35 to 50 teams expected for the event with an estimated 1,200 visitors from Georgia and around the Southeast expected in to attend.
“Our department is eager to host this event and I know we can count on our business community, local governments and citizens for their support,” said Rick Sanders, recreation director.
Jackson County’s relationship with Dizzy Dean baseball first began in 2002 when a pilot program was held for 7-8-year olds. After this, the recreation advisory committee decided to fully align its baseball program with Dizzy Dean baseball for ages 6-12 for the 2003 season. After this season, the department’s softball and older baseball programs were fully integrated with the Dizzy Dean organization.
Since 2004, Jackson County Parks and Recreation has been a leader within Dizzy Dean at the district and state levels. The department has hosted 15 district tournaments and four state tournaments in various age groups.
Jackson County Parks and Recreation teams have also won numerous district titles, three state titles and the 2007 10 and under Dizzy Dean softball world series championship.
